Essence of Africa was founded in 2005 by Mélanie van Tonder. She was born and bred on the continent of Africa in the small town of Brackenfell near Cape Town, South Africa. Melanie’s passion for the country and her understanding and respect of the diverse cultures of its people and their unique Art and Crafts, were strengthened by her father’s passion for travel and photography.
Throughout her childhood he took the family on various safaris and trips, traveling throughout South Africa and neighbouring countries including Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Botswana.
Melanie moved to the United Kingdom in 1998. However her love and passion for her country and its people, compelled her to start an online business, where she sells unique African Art and Crafts which are hand carved by extremely talented artists.
This passion draws us back to Africa on regular trips, where we take the opportunity to source works of art tailored to your specific requirements and tastes. We also seek out local artists who wish to trade with us directly.
Our aim is to work in partnership with and support individual African Artists, Craftsmen and women to benefit African rural communities and encourage self-sufficiency .
We also aim to educate our customers about African Cultures and implement Fair Trade.
Our main clientele are online customers, but we also plan to sell our products at gardening shows, exhibitions and exhibit in galleries.
